Business Monitor International

The Morocco Agribusiness Report Q110 is the first to feature our new forecasting period to 2014 and our improved Business Environment section. We are optimistic towards the performance of the sector in 2010, as improved macroeconomics - both globally and domestically - help drive investment and spur internal demand. The main challenge for the sector over the course of the current outlook is to enhance the attractiveness of farming to a population increasingly seeking services-based employment. This will require a strong commitment to improving fundamentals and promoting the benefits of the sector. Morocco is blessed with good quality soil, an abundant supply of water and a temperate climate - perfect for agriculture. Furthermore, a long growing season allows for a high level of production across a range of crops. The country is the second largest exporter of citrus fruits in the world.

The government deserves praise for the reforms it has undertaken in order to attract investment that is necessary to drive the sector forward. Infrastructure, including railways and motorways, has received notable income, while a major port development should enable the easier transportation of goods in and out of the country.

In October 2009, the World Fruit and Vegetable Show was held at the Excel Centre in London. The Moroccan Centre for Export Promotion (Maroc) took centre stage, as it sought to promote the wonders of the Moroccan fruit and vegetable sector to potential UK investors. Despite exporting the lion's share of its high quality fruit and vegetables to the EU, the lucrative UK market is one where Moroccan produce has failed to gain a larger foothold.

The livestock and poultry sector is very much dependent on grain imports and, according to the US Grains Council, the sector has benefitted from having protein rich US sorghum available for use as a feedstock. In October, Archer Daniels Midlands shipped around 25,000 tonnes of the grain to North Africa. We predict meat productivity and demand to continue performing solidly through 2010 and beyond as fundamentals improve.

Dairy consumption will show strong growth across the board, a dynamic that will increase in accordance with rising disposable incomes. Sugar imports will similarly remain substantial despite a 30% increase in production to 2014; Moroccans are among the highest consumers of sugar in the world and we do not see a change in this dynamic in the medium term, although, as we have seen in a host of developing and richer nations alike, increasing health consciousness is lending itself towards lower consumption of sugar based drinks and confectionaries.

As the industry continues to develop and increase productivity it is highly likely that the growing number of the many small-scale family farms will be forced to exit the industry as mechanisation and economies of scale take precedent. This will help give rise to a more commercially viable and efficient industry, which will similarly enhance the food security outlook, while becoming a more attractive prospect to potential farmers and investors.
