Mexican coal production increased significantly over the review period due to increased demand from manufacturing and power generation companies. Over the forecast period, demand for coal is expected to increase further as the Mexican government increases its efforts to promote coal as the main feedstock for the country's power generation. Moreover, the country's energy ministry has indicated the possibility of additional coal-fired power generation projects, which would be supplied by locally produced coal. However, aside from power generation, Mexico has only limited supplies of coking-grade coal which is used in the steel industry, although several companies are investing in the expansion of their mining operations in order to produce coking-grade coal. For example, in 2009, steel producer Grupo Acero del Norte carried out an expansion in Coahuila in order to rehabilitate and modernize its coke processing plant, leading to the production of 810,000 tons of cokeable coal per annum.
