Sales of new vehicles in Thailand's domestic market fell 10.8% in 2009, to a total of 548,871 units, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). This was a better performance than had been expected, thanks to a revival in demand in Q409. Domestic vehicle sales in December were particularly strong, rising 22.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 72,085 units. An FTI spokesman attributed the improved performance to a range of factors, including fiscal stimulus policies, higher tourism receipts and higher agricultural prices, which have all fed into improved consumer demand for big-ticket purchases. In January 2010, key local producer Toyota Motor stated that it expected aggregate domestic sales (ie by all car companies selling into Thailand's auto market) to recover to 600,000 units in 2010, a rise of 9% y-o-y. We view this forecast as largely realistic, although we are slightly less bullish, predicting that total domestic vehicle sales will rise by a shade under 7% in 2010, to a total of just under 586,000 units. Fiscal policy should remain supportive of consumer demand.

Vehicle production in Thailand fell 28.3% in 2009, to a total of annual volume of 999,378 units. This was also a slightly better performance than we had predicted. The year 2010 ought to herald a significant increase in y-o-y auto output. The FTI's auto association predicts that vehicle production will reach 385,693 units in Q110, a rise of 11% q-o-q and 94% y-o-y. For 2010 as a whole, we predict that auto output in Thailand will rise 6.5% to 1.065mn units.

As with production and sales, vehicle exports in 2009 held up better than expected, thanks largely to a better showing in the second half of the year, which saw improved vehicle demand in key external markets. Vehicle exports reached 535,565 units, a fall of 31% compared with the 775,652 newly built vehicles that were shipped in 2008. Largely in line with our cautiously positive production and sales forecasts, we anticipate that exports will rise by just over 5% to just over 563,000 units in 2010. Toyota continued to dominate the local sales market with a market share of 42.8% for 2009 as a whole, on the back of sales of 230,500 units for the year. In 2010, the company plans to sell a total of 257,000 new vehicles in Thailand, an increase of 11.5% y-o-y (a figure of 111,000 is targeted for passenger sales, while 146,000 is targeted for commercial vehicles). This is in line with the company’s prediction that total new vehicle sales in Thailand (inclusive of competitors) will reach 600,000 in 2010.
