Worldwide demand for melamine is expected to surpass 1.8 million tons by 2015. This is mainly propelled by growth in the major countries of Europe, the biggest market for melamine across the globe, and Asia-Pacific, especially, where growth is fastest. The market for melamine is relatively low in North and South America, due to the popularity of plywood veneers and solid wood.

Melamine is a crystalline, white powder produced from urea, which is an easily available material made from carbon dioxide and ammonia. Melamine acts as a raw material in the production of amino-formaldehyde resins. Melamine is used in a wide range of applications including adhesive resins, coatings, dinnerware, flame-retardants and laminates. Wood-based panel industry is the largest end-use market for melamine. The industry employs melamine in wooden-based panels, including Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and particleboard panels, and in laminates to make furniture, kitchen tops and laminate flooring panels.

According to Global Industry Analyst, Europe and Asia Pacific, especially China, dominates the world melamine market. In China, melamine is used in various applications in coatings, decoration board, timber processing, leather, molding plastic, textile, and paper industries. Timber processing and decoration board are the major end-use markets that account for nearly one-half of the overall consumption.

Global melamine manufacturers are facing several new challenges owing to the difficult economic and market situation. Some major manufacturers are under threat to close their units. However, there are some positive transitions in the market as new under-construction projects including Eurochem's plant in Russia, MHTL's melamine manufacturing facility in Trinidad & Tobago and QAFCO melamine plant in Qatar have not been abandoned. The aforementioned projects are likely to have considerable affect on the market. Although there is uncertainty with respect to profitability of these projects, the melamine market condition may show signs of improvement in the future.

Key players dominating the global melamine market include BASF SE, Borealis AG, AMI Agrolinz Melamine International GmbH, Chongqing Jian Feng Chemical Co., Ltd., Cytec Industries, Inc., Eurotecnica, Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc., Jinan Huatailong Chemical Co., Ltd., Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., Royal DSM N.V., Sichuan Jade Elephant Melamine S&T Co., Ltd., Shandong Haihua Company Limited, Zaklady Azotowe Pulawy SA, and Zhong Yuan Dahua Group Ltd., among others.
