Germany cigars market led by Dannemann

Cigars is quite a fragmented category in Germany, with only one company managing to hold a double-digit volume share - Dannemann . The company managed to increase its share in the review period. Its position can primarily be attributed to its well-performing Dannemann Moods brand, which is widely recognised and available almost everywhere.

Amidst the fragmented situation within cigars, big cigarette multinationals also registered a presence in 2011, with Philip Morris and Reemtsma occupying the second and third places, respectively. These companies have introduced eco-cigarillos as extensions of their premium cigarette brands in order to benefit from the huge consumer demand for them due to their low unit prices. Reemtsma‟s John Player Special and Philip Morris‟s Basic brands are the multinationals‟ key brands within cigarillos. The shares of the leading cigarette multinationals declined significantly in the review period due to market saturation in eco-cigarillos. Accordingly, both the Westpoint and Winfiled brands, belonging to BAT, were discontinued in 2011.

The consumer demand for cigars and cigarillos (excluding eco-cigarillos) is not based on price alone but on other factors such as the flavour, brand, variety and the tobacco type, and, as of 2011, the highest consumer demand is for Latin American cigars mainly from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Tobacco from these countries is considered to be of premium quality, carefully selected and produced to deliver high quality and genuine flavours.

Cigars continued to notch positive volume growth in 2011. During the 2006-2011 period, the smoking ban in foodservice had a major impact on cigar smokers. The inability to smoke within foodservice outlets has forced smokers outdoors and has created a need to shorten the smoking times due to the discomfort caused by this activity.

Overall cigars is expected to grow in volume sales and value sales in the forecast period. Most products in cigars are expected to experience volume growth, with the exception of large cigars. The volume growth of overall cigars will be particularly driven by the largest category, cigarillos.

Cigarillos are expected to show the strongest volume growth within cigars over 2011-2016. Cigarillos will continue to gain from cigarette smokers turning to cigarillos, though they are also likely to be affected by the new tax rises that make cigarillos more expensive than in the early part of the review period. Innovation will be the main driver of growth in cigarillos. Through launching new flavours or new mini-formats of existing brands, manufacturers will try to retain consumers.
