Mexico’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and AV products, is projected to be worth around US$9.9bn in 2010. Sales of digital cameras, TV sets and mobile phones all dipped in 2009, while tighter credit and rising unemployment are expected to prevent an early return to pre-2009 growth levels. The outlook for the Mexican consumer in 2010 is mixed, with improvements in consumer confidence contradicted by a 1.8% year-on-year (y-o-y) fall in retail sales in January. We expect private consumption to post just moderate growth this year. Despite these challenges, we forecast that per capita consumer electronics spending will rise from US$90 in 2009 to US$113 in 2014. The market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.0% to US$13.0bn by 2014, led by demand for flat-screen TV sets, feature-rich notebooks and other digital lifestyle products.
Computers ; Computer hardware accounted for around 54% of Mexico’s consumer electronics spending in 2009, with PC penetration around 20%. We forecast Mexican computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$5.4bn in 2010, with a return to growth after sales dipped in 2009, with desktops the segment most affected. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2010-2014 period is forecast at about 9.2%, driven by sales of notebooks and netbooks.
AV ; AV devices accounted for around 18% of Mexico’s consumer electronics spending in 2009. Mexico’s domestic AV device market is projected at around US$1.7bn in 2010. Sales of digital TV sets and digital cameras are projected to drive AV spending growth at a projected CAGR of 7.0% between 2010 and 2014.
Mobile Handsets ; Mobile handset sales accounted for around 29% of Mexico’s consumer electronics spending in 2009. Following a dip in 2009, Mexico’s market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.5% to US$3.2bn in 2014. Sales will be dominated by the replacement market, with growing demand for smartphones, PDAs and 3G handsets. In addition, nearly 40% of Mexican households do not currently have a mobile phone connection, making this segment a good target market for vendors.
