Peru's consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and AV products, is projected to be worth around US$1.7bn in 2010. The resilience of the Peruvian consumer throughout the downturn is one factor underlying our constructive view, with real private consumption growth of 4.4% forecast for 2010.
The total addressable Peruvian consumer electronics market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.9% to US$2.7bn by 2014. Implementation of digital TV broadcasting will drive demand for flat-screen TV sets. Meanwhile, more competition in the mobile telecoms sector and expansion in rural areas should boost the mobile handset segment.
Computers ; Computer hardware accounted for around 38% of Peru's consumer electronics spending in 2009, with PC penetration still below 20%. We forecast Peru's PC sales (including notebooks and accessories) to approach US$866mn in 2014. The PC market was boosted in 2009 by netbooks distributed by the One Laptop Per Child programme. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2010-2014 period is forecast at about 12.3%, driven by sales of notebooks.
AV ; AV devices accounted for around 41% of Peru's consumer electronics spending in 2009. Peru's domestic AV device market is projected at US$698mn in 2010. Sales of digital TV sets and digital cameras are projected to drive AV spending growth at a projected CAGR of nearly 13.6% between 2010 and 2014, as Peru prepares to transfer to digital broadcasting based on Brazil's SBTVD standard.
Mobile Handsets ; Mobile handset sales accounted for around 21% of Peru's consumer electronics spending in 2009. Peru's market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.7% to US$486mn in 2014, as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 88%. The introduction of a new operator should create further growth prospects for the market. Sales will be dominated by the low-tier segment, but there will be increasing demand for features such as MP3 players and cameras.
