AgustaWestland is a leader in military helicopter modernisation

There are a number of leading companies in the global military helicopter modernisation market. One of these companies is AgustaWestland.

AgustaWestland is an Anglo-Italian helicopter company, and wholly owned subsidiary of Italy's Finmeccanica, providing a range of solutions across the vertical lift market. In 2010 the company reported revenues of $4.9bn (EUR 3.64bn), up 4.7% on the previous year. The company, headquartered in Milan, Italy, employs 13,573 people worldwide. New orders accounted for $6.7bn (EUR 5.98bn), of which purchases and upgrades accounted for 52.8%. The company increased its reach in 2010 through the acquisition of Polish company, PZL-Swidnik.

The company also operates through a number of joint ventures and collaborative programmes with major European and American helicopter companies. The company offers a wide range of military helicopters, along with associated upgrade and modernisation packages including:

- AW109 Series - These light utility helicopters come in two variations, the AW109 LUH (Light Utility Helicopter) and the AW109 Power. They provide a wide-range of military options including light attack, transport, training, medical evacuation, search and rescue and maritime patrol.

- T129 - The T129 is a new all-weather, day and night, multi-role attack helicopter being developed in conjunction with Turkish arms contractors Aselsan and TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industries), based on the design of the AW129 and A129 Mangusta attack helicopter platforms, although the company continues to support upgrades and modernisation of these earlier models.

- AW159 - The latest variation in the Lynx family of helicopters. Operating in the utility and maritime roles, this is an extremely versatile helicopter that has already been selected for the "Future Lynx" programme by the British MOD.

- NH90 - This is a collaborative programme to produce a medium lift, multi-role helicopter. Designed in two main configurations: The TTH (Tactical Transport Helicopter), and the NFH (Naval Frigate Helicopter), the helicopter is already under order in a number of NATO countries.

- Apache AH Mk1 - A licensed built variation of the Boeing AH-46 Apache, produced for the British Army.

Market Overview

The military helicopter modernisation, upgrade & retrofit market is a fluctuating market, with spending strongly tied to available budgets. High flexibility from militaries within the market concerning the time frame for implementing upgrades means that programmes can be postponed or brought forward as necessitated in order to satisfy both operational and financial factors. As a consequence, major projects causing peaks to spending, and significant periods of delay, are common within the military helicopter modernisation, upgrade & retrofit market. Visiongain has determined that the value of the military helicopter modernisation, upgrade and retrofit market in 2012 will reach $3.98bn.

The market for military upgrades is expected to benefit from defence budget cutbacks in both the US and Western Europe, where upgrading and retrofitting existing helicopter fleets will form an economical alternative to purchasing new models. In Eastern Europe the desire for greater interoperability with NATO and the EU, coupled with large numbers of old Soviet models requiring upgrades, will drive significant investment.

While the emerging markets of Asia and South America are projected to focus on increasing new helicopter procurement, opportunities to provide proven upgrades and retrofits will persist. Continued uncertainty in the Middle East means that there is likely to remain a strong desire to maintain qualitative conventional advantage, even against quantitatively superior adversaries. As a result, opportunities for companies offering modernisation, upgrade & retrofit of rotary wing fleets are clear.
