Pakistan Allocates Defence Budget of USD 6.41 Billion in 2011

In the 2011, Pakistan had an active military of around 617,000, with an active reserve of 515,000. The Pakistani defence budget for 2011 was estimated to be US$6.41 Billion. The Pakistani land army consists of a total of 16,461 land weapons, 3,200 mortars and 11,500 logistical vehicles. The Pakistani Air Force has 1,414 aircraft in service and 535 helicopters. The Pakistani Navy has a total of 11 navy ships, 5 submarines and 1 destroyer.

Pakistan's defense industry was valued at US$5.8 billion in 2011. This figure is suggested to increase at a CAGR of 11.5%, which would value it at US$9.9 billion in 2016. The increased internal instability in Pakistan has occurred following the onset of its participation in the international military campaign against terrorism. This participation in the ‘War on Terror' will continue to drive Pakistani defense expenditure over the next five years. Pakistan's long-standing territorial dispute with India means that the defense strategy for Pakistan will largely correspond with Indian spending and development programs.

Furthermore, Pakistan is expected to allocate more than 3% of its GDP on defense expenditure over the forecast period, despite its relatively small economy. However, while the country received an additional US$7.4 billion of military aid from the US for its contributions towards the ‘war on terror' during the review period, it is expected to receive an increased package of US$7.6 billion over the forecast period.
