Being a tropical country, India receives solar radiation for 300 days, amounting to 3,000 hours of sunshine and equivalent to over 5,000 trillion kWh. All areas of India get around 4-7 kWh of solar radiation per square meter, with around 2,300 to 3,200 sunshine hours a year. Loss of electricity in India is of major concern to the population and has been a problem over many years. It is estimated that during the 2010-2011 years, 24.7% of the population of India experienced power cuts due to the shortage of electricity.
India is endowed with vast potential of solar energy, which when harnessed effectively can be addressed to a large-scale deployment of solar energy. Indian Government is adopting constructive steps towards implementing large-scale solar power projects and is poised to position itself as one of the world's major solar producer. Besides, it is quickly developing itself as the major manufacturing hub for solar power plants. Effective utilization of India's solar potential lies in the successful implementation of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) by the government. This mission would also help in mitigating the international pressure with regard to emission reductions.
India portrays unlimited growth potential for solar photovoltaic industry in future. Ever-increasing electricity demand, high irradiation levels, favorable government policies, and huge investments worth Billions of dollars are propelling growth of this industry. Currently, the Indian solar energy market is being served by players, such as BHEL, Tata Solar, Moser Baer India, etc.
Besides, the government is eager to increase the overall share of solar energy in the country by concurrently improving infrastructural conditions in the country, especially through solar parks and schemes like ‘development of solar cities', energy efficient green buildings', generation-based incentives, and subsidies and promotion for solar PV devices that are also encouraging PV installation in the country. Majority of the states are deploying PV power plants and with the effective implementation of the National Solar Mission, it is expected that, the annual PV-installed capacity will grow at a CAGR of around 49.5% during 2010-2014 to reach 1500 MW by 2014-end.
