United States non-life insurance market value decreased between 2007 and 2011

The US non-life insurance segment is the largest and most mature non-life segment in the world. The written premium value of the segment decreased during the review period. The decline was partially as a consequence of high levels of unemployment, an uncertain economic climate, low investment returns and conditions permitting low interest rates.

In addition, the sharp decline of property prices by over 30%, coupled with the decreasing demand of passenger car sales in the domestic market, contributed to the review period's weak conditions. The occurrence of a series of natural disasters negatively impacted the profitability of non-life insurance companies during the review period.
