Global membrane bioreactor systems market reached value of $746 million during 2011

The global MBR operation is expected to grow from 3,879 thousand cubic meters/day in 2011 to 12,344 thousand cubic meters/day by 2017, at an estimated CAGR of 20.8% for the period 2012 to 2017. As of year 2011, Asia-Pacific leads MBR market with a share of 41.2% in terms of value, followed by Europe and North America. Countries in this region such as China and Japan use membrane bioreactors extensively for water reuse purpose in municipal application. The APAC region is expected to continue its dominance on the global MBR demands.

The global MBR market was worth an estimated $746 million in 2011. This value is expected to increase at a CAGR of 14.6% during the period from 2012-2017. APAC leads the global MBR market with share of 38.7% followed by Europe and North America in terms of revenue in the year 2011.

The global membrane bioreactor market is growing due to its ability to meet stringent effluent criteria along with its compact size and less operational cost as compare to other systems and equipments which are use for wastewater treatment. According to WHO, about one fifth of the world's population resides in areas where water is physically scarce, while one fourth face scarcities due to lack of infrastructure to transport water. Governments and industries have realized the importance of wastewater treatment, as a necessity and also as means to improve the bottom line. Stringent legislations for the implementation of the treatment facilities, combined with the space and operational advantages that MBRs provide, are expected to be key drivers of the market going forward. The sophistication and high capital costs associated with the system could however prove to be key obstacles.

APAC holds major market share in MBR market. Europe is the second largest consumer. Countries in this region such as China and Japan use membrane bioreactors extensively for water reuse purpose in municipal application. With new factors coming into play, the MBR technology is now beginning to mature and will continue to penetrate further in the wastewater effluent treatment market.

APAC market share is 38% in the global MBR revenue market; Europe has 17% of share. However it is still the APAC region which is on the rise with a CAGR of 15.1% from 2012 to 2017. The MBR market by application is segmented into key segments as municipal and industrial wastewater treatments. The municipal wastewater applications occupy a major share in the consumption market, and are expected to be the fastest growing segment, going ahead.

Among the various types of MBR marketed, hollow fiber and flat sheet cover the major market of the membrane bioreactor, which is approximately 95.3% of the overall membrane bioreactor market. Selection is based on an evaluation of various criteria, including packing density, investment cost, fouling tendency, cleaning and operating costs, and membrane replacement costs.

Report Overview

This report analyses the Membrane bioreactor (MBR) market by geography, applications, configurations, and types of MBR. By geography, the report is segmented into Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, and Rest of the World. The MBR type segment included in this report is based on design of the membrane, i.e. hollow fiber, flat sheet, and multi tubular. The end-users of this technology are spread across various industries - food & beverage, pharmaceutical, textile, oil field, chemical, automotive, landfill leachate, steel, and electronics. The application segment has thus focused on 2 major sectors: industrial and municipal.

This report estimates the market size of the global MBR market in terms of value, while the geography segment covers both the value as well as volumes of the market. It discusses market drivers, restraints and opportunity, and price trends. It also includes patent analysis. The value chain analysis, cost analysis, and the Porter's analysis gives further insight into the impact factors in the industry sector. The report tracks the recent activities of market players in terms of product launches, expansion plans, supply contracts, and partnerships and collaborations. In addition, the top 22 players of the MBR market have been profiled in this report, and based on the study of these competitors a winning imperative has been sketched.

The MBR market report covers its usage across regions. The market is analyzed in terms of volume (thousand cubic meter/day) consumed in each region. The stringent environmental regulations, the scarcity of available water combined with the economy of space and ease of automation that MBRs provide are driving the growth in its demand, usage, and range of applications. Costs associated with its manufacturing are dependent heavily on the membrane and its design, the biogas, and chemical consumption during operation. These high capital costs, coupled with the need for trained workers to operate the sophisticated system hinder the growth in the market. The rising demand in developing regions, however, can counter such restraints.

Report Scope

The report breaks the global MBR consumption market into the following three segments:

Based on Geography: The report is segmented in regions such as Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, and Rest of the World; and major countries such as U.S., Germany, China, Japan, and Brazil.

Based on Type: The report divides the MBR market on the basis of the type as hollow fiber, flat sheet, and multi tubular.

Based on Application: The important applications considered in this report are municipal and industrial wastewater treatments.

Based on Configuration: The important membrane component locations considered in this report are external (sidestream) and internal (submerged) membranes.
