The retail value share of pet food and pet care product sales accounted for by non-grocery channels -including specialists such as pet shops, pet superstores, veterinary clinics and "farm and feed stores" -remained virtually static for the first time in more than a decade during 2009, holding steady at 2008 levels of 55%. Conversely, the global retail share claimed by grocery retailers fell marginally in 2009, to 44% of total market value, down 10 basis points from 2008. In rather stark contrast, grocery retailers lost 60 basis points of retail value share from 2007 to 2008. Meanwhile, non-store retailing continues to grow in popularity, claiming 1.1% of overall retail value sales in 2009, up 10 basis points from 2008 and nearly 100 points from 1998.
