BDS employs 68,000 people worldwide. In 2010, BDS reported that total revenues of $31.94bn, a drop of 5% from $33.66bn in 2009. According to data from the US General Services Administration (GSA), Boeing ranked 10th on the list of leading US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contractors in 2010, having secured contracts worth a total of $208m.

In June 2010, Boeing announced that it had completed the installation of 10 Remote Video Surveillance System (RVSS) units in the US Border Patrol's Detroit Sector, wrapping up the company's work on the Northern Border Project. The project included the deployment of five similar systems for the Buffalo Sector.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provided cameras, sensors and towers, while Boeing was responsible for installing the surveillance systems and connecting them to headquarters. In March 2009, Boeing stated that it had received a task order worth about $20m from CBP for the deployments under the Secure Border Initiative Network (SBInet) contract.

In January 2011, the US Department of Homeland Security announced the cancellation of the SBInet program. Whilst this was undoubtedly a setback for Boeing, they have since made it clear that they plan to continue to grow their border security and surveillance systems business.

Introduction

Border security systems are sought by governments the world over who continue to be concerned with monitoring and recording the flow of goods and persons across international boundaries. Although the expansion of international agreements in Europe and Eurasia is reducing the number of secured international borders, continued threats from international terrorism, cross-border crime and illegal immigration maintain border security as a top priority in more developed states, and increasingly in developing states. The value of the border security market in 2011 is expected to reach $17bn.

The border security market is likely to feel the impact of major cuts in public spending, especially in Europe and the US, however concerns over homeland security are likely to remain high, meaning that whilst growth may slow, the market will continue to grow. The market is also likely to be supported by increased spending across the board in the developing countries of Asia, whilst international sporting events taking place in developing countries will also drive market growth.
