Following the launch of 3G service by all three of Turkey’s mobile operators in July 2009, 3G growth appears to have been strong. There is not yet full data available on the growth patterns for 3G. BMI is hopeful that all of Turkey’s mobile operator may eventually indicate not only how many 3G SIMs they have in circulation, but how many are used in dongles and how many in handsets. At present all we have are very positive growth reports from Turkcell, which reports that by November it had sold 200,000 3G modems and netbooks combined. It also said that there were 2mn 3G subscribers in Turkey, though we do not know exactly what this was based on. At launch, market leader Turkcell said that it saw 3G penetration reaching 20% in two years. It is unclear whether this was meant as 20% of the mobile market, or 20% of the population. In two years, these will not be far off the same thing, but in any case BMI believes that this forecast is still a little optimistic, even with the strong growth. 20% in two years would be impressive 3G growth for any market, and the Turkish mobile market is currently undergoing something of an extended downturn.

Turkey’s mobile market has been contracting. Having ended 2008 with 65.833mn mobile subscribers, by the mid-point of 2009 there were only 63.665mn mobile subscribers in Turkey. This led BMI to downgrade our forecasts for the year, but we still expect the market to recover over the next few months, and return to its progress towards and eventually beyond 100% penetration. Q3 has to some degree borne out this position by showing a slight increase in subscriber numbers, but it remains likely that the market will struggle to show any growth in 2009. Vodafone reversed its very long losing streak by gaining subscribers in Q309. This was a very notable occurrence, but time will tell if it is something that it can maintain. Our Business Environment Rankings have seen a change this quarter, with Turkey now included within the Central and Eastern Europe table. Turkey sits near the middle, just in the top half of the table. It is most comparable to Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia.
