Tokyo is the most popular destination among international arrivals in Japan, with about 3.0 million visitors in 2009. This figure was four times larger than the second most popular, Osaka. The ongoing global financial recession was reflected in a large decline in the number of arrivals in Tokyo in 2009, with a fall of 17%. This was, however, smaller than the decrease in the total number of arrivals in Japan, of 29%. In 2009, the US registered the largest total number of visitors to Tokyo, of 470,000, followed by China. A relatively large proportion of arrivals from Western countries, such as the US, the UK, France, Germany and Australia, visited Tokyo. 77% of arrivals from France visited Tokyo, 74% from the US and 64% from the UK. This was partly due to those countries having relatively large proportions of business travellers, but also most leisure travellers from those countries are first-time visitors and tend to visit the most popular sightseeing spots, such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.
Inbound tourism to Tokyo was hit hard by the global recession with hotels, airlines and travel retailers recording double digit losses, compounded further by the city’s reliance on business travel. The forecast outlook is slightly rosier with inbound tourism expected to record healthy growth driven by intra-regional demand, especially from South Korea, China and Hong Kong.
