After good results in the hospitality sector in the first quarter of 2008, which was partly due to the fact that the Easter holiday was celebrated in March (as opposed to April in 2007) and there was a strong interest in spa resorts, data for Q208 record noticeable weakness in the sector year-on-year (y-o-y) for both foreign and domestic tourism.
Hospitality The number of overnight stays totalled 9.7mn in Q208, which was 3.6% lower y-o-y. Of these overnight stays, foreign tourism nights reached 5.2mn, down by 3.5% compared with the same period in 2007, while domestic residents recorded 4.5mn overnight stays, a fall of 3.8% y-o-y. The average length of overnight stays for all guests also decreased from 3.0 to 2.9 nights. During the same period, a total of 3.4mn guests were recorded at collective accommodation establishments, down marginally on Q207, with a total of 1.8mn foreign and 1.6mn domestic guests (up 0.3% y-o-y and down 0.6% y-o-y respectively).
Spa accommodation establishments recorded 1.9mn overnight stays, down 2.4% y-o-y, although foreign tourism nights were up 2.5% y-o-y to 0.8mn nights. As regards source markets, the majority of tourists in all accommodation establishments came from Germany but arrivals declined markedly, by almost 11% yo- y. The highest growth in the number of overnight stays was recorded in arrivals from Poland (up around 30% y-o-y) and Russia (up some 26% y-o-y).
Forecast Scenario BMI has revised down its forecast for foreign visitor arrivals to the Czech Republic in 2008 to show only marginal growth y-o-y. This is based, in part, on hospitality sector data for foreign arrivals in H108.
Furthermore, we foresee negative growth in arrivals in 2009, with recovery taking place only in 2010.
This is largely due to continued weakness in arrivals from key source markets – especially Germany and the UK. Moreover, BMI maintains a modest outlook for foreign visitor arrivals over the remainder of the extended forecast period to 2013. This is based strongly on our view of the strength of the Czech koruna in relation to the euro over the medium term.
Prague Ruzyne International Airport Latest figures for the first eight months of 2008 show Prague Ruzyne International Airport recorded an increase in passenger numbers of nearly 6% compared with the corresponding period of 2007. During the same period, low-cost airlines transported about 13% more passengers y-o-y, while their share of the airport’s overall operations was almost 24% (up slightly on the previous year).
Czech Airlines In H108, Czech Airlines (CSA) generated a profit of US$209,000 according to international reporting standards. This represents an improvement of some US$37mn y-o-y, which is an impressive result considering high fuel costs. Operationally, CSA reported a profit of US$15.3mn in H108, with overall revenue up US$177.5mn to US$700mn, while operational costs were down y-o-y. Passenger traffic in H108 was over 2.6mn, a favourable increase of nearly 6% on the same period in 2007.
