The global private tutoring market has been forecast to hit a valuation of US$102.8 billion by 2018, driven by favourable demographic factors and the adoption of new technologies in various educational practices.
Furthermore, rising student enrolments, intense competition among students, lack of teaching staff at schools, and outdated school infrastructural facilities, and the need to excel in competitive exams, particularly in Asian countries, is driving parents to seek the services of private tutors.
Education is among the top-ranked industries in the world, and tutoring is a key constituent of the global education industry. The private tutoring industry's growth is primarily attributed to the inability of the standard education system to address the unique needs of each student.
Asia-Pacific, Europe and the United States accounts for a lion's share of the revenues in the global private tutoring market, with the industry predominantly thriving in Asia-Pacific, particularly in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, India, and China.
The demand for private tuitions in several of these countries is driven by the fact that competitive entrance examinations are critical for gaining admission into leading universities and colleges. Lack of adequate funding for public schools and education systems in developing countries compel students to seek additional knowledge and competence through private tuitions.
The increase in school tests and scholarship exams proves to be beneficial for small tutoring services providers. In addition, major developing countries such as Brazil and several Eastern Europe countries are witnessing rapid growth of private tutoring market.
Private tuition in the UK is currently unregulated. This should be of great concern to parents as it means that anyone can advertise as a private tutor and therefore the burden of identifying and selecting an appropriate tutor lies completely with the parents.
The benefits of one-to-one tuition are well recognised. Research has shown that it boosts a student's grades, particularly in Mathematics and especially for boys.
Key players currently dominating the private tutoring market include Educomp Solutions Ltd., JEI Corporation, Kaplan Inc., Kumon, LearningRx, Sylvan Learning, and TutorVista Global.
