The Polish business of Skanska - the global construction firm - has been awarded a £90 million/PLN 184 million contract by Gdanskie Inwestycje Komunalne, the Gdansk city road project organisation.

The contract will see Skanska conduct the second phase of an 8.3km road outside the city of Gdansk (located on the Baltic coast of northern Poland), named the Sucharski Route. The route runs from the south-east towards the north-west of the city and will provide an efficient connection between the harbour/port region and the outer road network of the Gdansk Bay Metropolis, as well as constituting part of a major inner traffic network within the city of Gdansk.

The second phase of the project, which has been partially financed by the EU, entails the building of a two lane road, 2.7 km in length; a roundabout; two junctions; four viaducts and a flyover. Skanska has also received word that it is to complete the third phase of the infrastructure project, which is anticipated to be finished by the end of 2012. The work will start straightaway.

Skanska's Polish arm is one of the largest companies of its type in the country, employing nearly 7,000 staff and reporting a turnover figure of SEK 9 billion during 2010.
