The US refrigerator market has been forecast to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2% in volume terms over the next four years to reach 15.7 million units by 2016.
In terms of value sales, the industry is to increase at a CAGR of 3% over the same time frame, hitting a market value of US$14.4 billion by 2016.
Whirlpool Corp remained the single largest refrigeration appliances manufacturer at retail level in 2011, controlling 20% of volume sales. Sears Holdings Co, General Electric Co (GE) and Electrolux Home Products North America held a combined volume share of 50% in a highly consolidated American refrigeration appliances category. All four manufacturers/marketers have extensive distribution in leading DIY/hardware chain stores and mass merchandisers.
Kenmore, the private label of leading appliance retailer Sears, remained the single largest name in refrigeration appliances with 19% volume share in 2011. Kenmore benefits from competitive price positioning and ubiquity within the Sears chain of department stores and other retail locations. GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool and Haier were the remaining top five brands of refrigeration appliances in terms of retail volume sales over the year.
Within refrigeration appliances, freestanding fridge-freezers are expected to perform well, with value and volume sales both expected to enjoy a volume CAGR of 3% through to 2016.
Freestanding freezers are expected to be the only category that contracts in volume terms over the forecast period, as consumers gravitate towards high capacity fridge-freezers as a multifunctional alternative to the traditional box freezer.
