Following a period of strong returns for private equity firms during 2003 to 2007, the financial crisis and the end to cheap credit conditions combined with rising asset prices resulted in substantially reduced private equity activity.

Private equity fortunes are expected to sour once again in 2011 to 2012 following a short period of resurgence in 2010 when debt markets improved and strategic buyers returned to the market.

The deteriorating economic outlook and turbulent financial markets in 2011 are expected to reduce asset valuations further. Private equity revenue in the UK is expected to reach £1.4 billion in 2011. Conditions in the private equity market in the UK are forecast to improve over the next five years.
