Danny Thomas represents one of the first out of a total of twenty five people to be able to benefit from a US Military developed bionic prosthetic leg which provides people with an intuitive knee for the first time.
The Genium Bionic Prosthetic System was launched in the summer 2011 and allows civilians the ability to immediately change speeds, walk up stairs, walk backwards, make multi-directional movements, walk over obstacles and in wet rugged environments due to a sophisticated set of rules and sensory system.
Genium represents the first intuitive knee; technology which is now available to civilians and veterans. The Genium Bionic Prosthetic System was developed in collaboration with Otto Bock Healthcare and the US Military. The Genium system uses a complex sensory system, including accelerometer and a gyroscope, combined with sophisticated rule sets to offer unique features which optimise gait movement and confidence with the user.
The worldwide market for orthopedic prosthetics is expected to reach US$19.4 billion by 2015. Key factors for this increase in market growth include an increasingly ageing population, rising cases of degenerative joint diseases such as arthritis, and the desire to maintain an active lifestyle.
