The online gambling market is proving to be a global phenomenon. Currently, Europe represents the quickest expanding online gambling market. In 2009, European online gambling business operators recorded almost a 44.9% increase in the total online gaming yield.
Since 2011, online gambling has been legalised across a number of European countries, with the UK setting the trend.
In 2010 there was a 32% uplift in the number of visits from UK Internet users to the gambling sector, proving the UK online gambling market is growing rapidly. To put that in context, the social networking category grew by just 4.5% over the same time period.
Beginning in 2012, the UK saw increasing opportunities for live online casino services, with more and more online gamblers becoming aware of this gambling method.
In Germany online casinos and online poker were only legalised in Schleswig-Holstein in 2012, yet gross revenue from online gambling is expected to total nearly 2 billion EUR nationwide in 2015. Online gambling revenues in Germany are projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost +20% until 2015.
Since 2004, women's share of Internet users between the ages of 16 and 74 in Europe has increased by more than 80%, while the same age group for men has seen an increase of 60%. Online gaming used to attract mainly younger men, but these days it is becoming increasingly popular amongst women and older age groups.
