The global paperboard boxes market has been forecast to hit a market value of US$216 billion by 2018, with industry growth set to be driven by an increase in the durable and non-durable goods segments, a strong food and beverages market, the rising demand for prepared and processed foods, and the increasing popularity of premium boxes, specifically printed boxes.
Paperboard boxes include two classifications: folding paperboard boxes and set up paperboard boxes. The folding paperboard box is made of glued paperboard and is shipped to the user as a flat structure ready to be folded. The box is then easily erected and filled; by hand or, in some instances, by machine.
Folding paperboard boxes usually have one of three basic structure types; the tuck top and bottom, reverse tuck or straight tuck. Straight tuck paperboard boxes are also referred to as straight-line boxes as the glue flaps consist of a straight line. The tuck top auto bottom paperboard box, regular auto bottom or hardware bottom, and trays, usually come with four corner lids with bottom, or six corner lids attached.
Set up paperboard boxes are usually, but not exclusively, found in a jewellery store. The set up box usually consists of two pieces; a lid and a bottom. These boxes are often wrapped in printed-paper and often have elaborate and inventive interiors that might include felt finishing.
Given its ubiquity in packaging, trends in industry revenue are correlated with global demand from manufacturing and retail sectors. As a result, industry revenue was adversely affected by the global downturn, with decreased demand from manufacturing sectors in developed markets, such as the United States and Europe, outweighing strong performance in China, India and other emerging markets.
Asia-Pacific, led by China, became the global leader in the paperboard boxes sector, surpassing the US and European markets. Besides China, India, with increased investments in the hi-tech manufacturing machineries, heightened focus on offering superior quality products. Asia-Pacific, therefore, represents the largest and the fastest growing regional market.
