This slight increase could be due to a number of factors including household disposable income, consumer sentiment, higher youth unemployment, internet access and computer usage, online shopping and competition from department stores.

The recession has a big impact on the UK computer game publishing market through the five years to 2012, with revenues declining at a negative CAGR of 1.9%.
This industry slowness was most apparent through 2010-11 as bad economic news and subdued consumer spending took their toll on games retailers.
Economic conditions led households to postpone expenditure on non-necessary items and demand for computer games, particularly new ones, suffered. Publishers were also wary about funding new games during the recession, in case the demand was not there.
However, the number of people who play games has risen over the past five years to incorporate non-traditional markets. Women are now playing games more than ever, and mobile phone gaming has opened the door to a large market as well.
The UK computer game publishing market is currently home to 251 businesses, which employ approximately 4,049 workers.
