The prolonged Global recession during the period 2007 to 2009 is accelerating the growth in electronic access control systems (EACS) sales as the likelihood of white-collar crimes such as shop-lifting and break-ins increases. The financial pinch felt by employees and workers combined with deep austerity measures is placing a greater emphasis for companies to invest in electronic access control systems. By 2017, the global market for electronic access control systems is forecast to total US$14.1 billion.

There is increased focus on providing improved security and safety within organisations and government agencies despite the recession. Capital shortages, reduced personnel and an increased number of unemployed have dampened growth in the electronic security systems although the increased need to provide safe environments for staff and public places as increased investment in security based systems. Government agencies remain the largest investor in electronic security systems.

The emerging markets such as Asia, Latin America and the Middle East are expected to drive further growth in the electronic security systems market. Interestingly, United States remains the largest regional market for security systems although it is the Asia Pacific region which will represent the fastest growing region for electronic security systems, reporting 13.5% CAGR. In addition, we expect Biometrics based electronic access control systems to represent the fastest expanding market sector over the next five years as sales increase by 13.1% CAGR during the period 2011 to 2017. Cutting edge biometrics-based technology is expected to be implemented within access control security systems in line with the onset of eGovernment, digital identity, and cloud computing.

The leading companies operating in the global electronic security systems market are Aiphone Co. Ltd., ASSA ABLOY AB, BIO-key, International Inc., DigitalPersona Inc, Gunnebo Ab, Hirsch Electronics Corporation, Honeywell Access Systems, Ingersoll Rand Recognition Systems Inc., Linear LLC, Imprivata® Inc., Kaba Holding AG, NAPCO Security Systems Inc., PAC International Ltd, SAFRAN Group, SecuGen Corporation, Siemens Industry USA Building Technologies, Siemens Building Technologies Security Products Limited, The Chamberlain Group Inc, UTC Fire & Security, Chubb Securite S.A.S, and GE Security Inc.
