The global visible light communications market has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 82% over the next five years, hitting a market value of $6,138.02 million by 2018.
Visible light communication (VLC) is a data communications medium using visible light between 400 THz (780 nm) and 800 THz (375 nm). Visible light is not injurious to vision.
The technology uses fluorescent lamps (ordinary lamps, not special communications devices) to transmit signals at 10 kbit/s, or LEDs for up to 500 Mbit/s. Low rate data transmissions at 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) and 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) were demonstrated. RONJA achieves full Ethernet speed (10 Mbit/s) over the same distance thanks to larger optics and more powerful LEDs.
The technology is more secure and achieves higher data rates when compared to conventional wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Wimax etc., which use radio waves for communication.
Reliability and network coverage are the major issues to be considered by the companies while providing VLC services. Interferences from external light sources like sun light, normal bulbs; and opaque materials in the path of transmission will cause interruption in the communication.
The high installation cost of VLC systems can be complemented by large-scale implementation of VLC, while adopting VLC technology will reduce further operating costs like electricity charges, and maintenance charges etc.
The VLC technology market is still in the introductory phase. Indoor networking and location based services are the only applications that have been penetrated in the market, while products for other applications (intelligent traffic management system, in-flight entertainment, and underwater communication) are expected to hit the market by the end of 2013.
Top players dominating the VLC market include LVX System (US), pureVLC Ltd (UK), Nakagawa Laboratories, Inc. (Japan), Outstanding Technology Corporation (Japan) and ByteLight (US).
