• M&A activity in the retail sector was led by the consolidation in the supermarkets segment in Europe, driven by increasing competition and economic slowdown. The retail sector witnessed increased private equity interest, with a focus on loss-making retailers with revival potential.
• The retail sector recorded 47 M&A deals in July, a marginal increase of 2.9% compared to the six month average (Jan 2008–Jun 2008). BRIC countries recorded the highest increase in M&A activity in volume terms over the six month average. However, the M&A activity remained flat on a month-on-month basis.
• The month recorded four public offerings, an increase of 71.4% as compared with the last six month average. The month witnessed a decrease in private placement, recording just one deal.
