However, northern production areas of wheat suffered serious drought at the beginning of 2009, and the stricken areas went beyond 23 million acres. It is predicted that the wheat price will rise in 2009, with the possibility of advance in the whole grain price.

Recently, the policies of canceling agricultural taxes issued by Chinese government and dispensing subvention are favorable to the grain production. However, the shift of rural workforce to cities and high price of chemical fertilizers and pesticides lead to the less growth of grain production.
