• The financial services sector recorded 188 M&A deals in September, an increase of 2.5% over the six-month average. M&A activity in the retail banking segment was driven by consolidation to survive the severe liquidity crisis resulting from the sub-prime collapse.
• The corporate and investment banking segment recorded significant M&A activity, led by the collapse of Lehman Brothers and acquisition of Merrill Lynch. Activity in the capital markets and brokerage segment was focused on commodity and forex trading.
• Fundraising through public capital markets witnessed significant activity, recording a 14.6% increase in value terms over the six-month average. Companies in the financial services sector raised $249.4bn through private placements; activity was led by the rescue of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.
